Known for many years as “The Jewel of Central America” Costa Rica has become the premiere destination for many of the world’s travelers. Over the last decade tourism in this small country (roughly 21,000 sq. mi. or approximately the size of West Virginia) has increased 400%. Known for not possessing a military, Costa Rica has become the most stable government in Central America due in large part to its lack of corruption, truly democratic government, and strong economic history. At 3.4% Costa Rica’s unemployment rate is the lowest in the hemisphere which has led to the lowest incidence of violent crime in Central America. Today, Costa Rica has the largest percentage of middle class and the most equitable distribution of wealth in Latin America. Costa Rica has a history of being an environmentally friendly and responsible country. With such a diverse range of climates, animals, and foliage the country has taken a strong stance against the exploitation of these assets. The inception of the 200 meter Maritime Zone in 1977 is sure to protect the over 800 miles of coastline and the thousands of beaches (Voted Conde Nast’s Top 10 Beaches in 2002) that line both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts (All beaches in Costa Rica are public). Approximately 25% of the country’s land has been set aside in protected areas to insure the stability of one of the world’s most bio-diverse countries. 5% of the world’s animal and foliage species currently are found in Costa Rica. Add to this over 300 volcanoes; 5 of which are active, tropical rainforests pushing right up to the oceans, mountain peaks topping 12,500 feet, and average temperatures between 60°F and 90°F and you are left with a country that appeals to almost everyone’s taste.
Tourism & Residency
Offering so much in such a small package has made this country attractive to both tourists and retirees. People are flocking to Costa Rica for a number of reasons, and many are staying for a number more reasons. Travelers of all kinds have been visiting Costa Rica for years, but more recently due to the expansion in services the country has become a primary destination for many. It seems that no matter what it is you look for in a vacation destination; you can find it in Costa Rica. Possessing some of the world’s most beautiful beaches is what originally led people to the country. Now Costa Rica is a favorite amongst adventure travelers. The country contains many world class rapids for those seeking a kayaking or white-water rafting adventure. The many volcanoes and natural parks teaming with exotic wildlife and endangered species draw thousands of nature enthusiasts every year. Both coasts can lay claim to having some of the best sportfishing on the planet. A favorite in the country amongst visitors are the amazing canopy tours. Add to this the many famous surfing breaks, the cloud forests, Lake Arenal, scuba diving & snorkeling, famous motorcycle and ATV tours, horseback riding, dolphin & whale watching tours, the friendly culture, and it’s proximity to the United States (5 hours from New York, 2 ½ hours from Miami) and you see why people are coming here by the thousands.
For retirees and ex-Pats Costa Rica has long been the hidden jewel of retirement communities and alternative living options outside the United States. According to a survey in “The Robb Report” of potential foreign investment/retirement areas, Costa Rica surpasses all countries. Currently, Costa Rica has more Americans per capita living within the country than anywhere else in the world besides the United States. The reasons for living here outnumber the reasons for visiting; on top of all of the activities that are at you fingertips the country boasts a number of advantages for those looking to “unplug”:
- The constitution of Costa Rica offers foreigners; even without residency, many of the same rights as citizens. The Costa Rican constitution allows foreigners the same rights as citizens with respect to property ownership. The National Registry system is one of the most secure in the world and title insurance is available through both Chicago Title and Stewart Title. Property taxes are significantly lower and there is no capital gains tax on the sale of property in Costa Rica. Residency requirements are minimal; the government requires $600 per month in pension income, or $1,200 per month in investment income, or an investment of above $50,000 in a sector of the economy.
- An added benefit for retirees and those with health concerns is the state of medicine in Costa Rica. Thousands are coming every year for the low cost medical services provided by world-class physicians; everything from dental work to face-lifts and minor surgeries is provided at a fraction of the cost in the United States. Many people prefer to have surgery within the country because of the treatment of patients after surgery; with large recovery rooms, excellent nurse service, and all at very inexpensive rates people prefer to recover in paradise. Low cost private and public health insurance is offered to everyone with many international carriers honoring medical procedures in Costa Rica.
- The banking system within Costa Rica is sophisticated and offers many of the same options you would find around the world. Foreigners are allowed without restriction to have bank accounts. Many banks offer accounts similar to Money Markets which are currently yielding 5%, high interest accounts which are tax-free, and a number of savings account options currently yielding between 2% and 4%. All deposits in national banks are backed by the government without limit and many accounts have the same access to securities as other banks offer around the world.
If you couple all this with: the low cost of skilled labor (approx. $3 hour), the low cost of hired help (approx. $250 per month for a full maid or chef), the low cost of construction (approx. $80 per sq. ft. for a luxury home), utilities much the same as in the U.S., cable, satellite, Direct TV, and high speed internet access at a third the cost of the U.S., English newspapers and T.V. channels, the fact that anyone can drive with a passport and a valid driver’s license from their country, and a sophisticated bus system; you can see how so many are already living a better life for less money in this modern day “Garden of Eden”.
